The Perfect Mouthguards for Athletes

Before you step onto the court or field, don’t forget to put your mouthguard in! It’s very important that you protect your smile as you participate in high-contact activities. If you don’t, your smile is in grave danger and it can be easily injured. If you have braces, it’s even more important for you to wear a mouthguard. That way, you will protect your teeth as well as your orthodontic appliance. If you don’t currently have a mouthguard, we recommend considering one of the following:

Stock mouthguards
Stock mouthguards are going to be your cheapest and easiest option. They are generally available at your local sporting goods stores and they are ready to use right when you take them out of the package. However, they do tend to feel a bit bulky when athletes wear them, which makes it hard to breathe at times. They offer minimal protection and they fit a wide variety of smiles.

Boil-and-bite mouthguards
Boil-and-bite mouthguards can be warped into the shape of your smile, which makes it more of a custom fit compared to stock mouthguards. You can purchase this guard at the store and you can shape it at home. All you need to do is put the guard into a pot of boiling water, place it into your mouth, and firmly bite down. Then, apply pressure to the guard with your fingers and tongue to form the guard into the perfect shape. The guard will then cool and harden into the shape of your smile.

Custom-made mouthguards
Custom-made mouthguards are going to be your best option when it comes to using a guard that is made perfectly for your smile. Your dentist or orthodontist will create a mouthguard that will fit over your teeth and braces, giving you the best protection possible. This may be your best option when it comes to choosing a mouthguard; however, it might also be the most expensive.

Each one of these mouthguards can help you protect your smile and braces; all you need to do now is purchase one and remember to wear it!
