How Important Are Mouthguards?

What would it be like if you suddenly found yourself missing a few teeth? Did you know that if you play sports, this is a real possibility? To help you keep your smile safe, we recommend wearing a mouthguard when you play any sport. Please don’t misunderstand; this includes contact sports like hockey and football, but also sports such as basketball, wrestling, and gymnastics.

But, which mouthguard will work best for you? In reality, you have three choices: custom, stock, and boil and bite mouthguards.

Unfortunately, not all mouthguards are created equal. Stock mouthguards tend to be too heavy and bulky and can make it difficult to breathe or speak. Boil and bite mouthguards usually fit better because they are softened, then bit into. This means they will at least have a shape similar to your smile. Still, the fit will not be perfect and they are made of lower-quality material than what a dentist can offer.

While you will need to visit a dentist for a custom mouthguard, they are specifically designed to fit your smile. This will make breathing easier and wearing your mouthguard more comfortable. Custom mouthguards will also absorb impact more effectively and prevent damage to your teeth or head. Similarly, because custom mouthguards distribute impact properly, you will be less likely to suffer from fractures and concussions.

On a final note, regardless of the kind you decide on, there are a few things you should do to care for it. For example, it is very important to clean your mouthguard with toothpaste and a toothbrush. T is important to clean it out this way before you use your mouthguard and right after. Similarly, you should avoid leaving your mouthguard in hot water or out in the sun. Finally, please remember to replace your mouthguard when it is worn.
